Get NZ Writing - School Kit

We were very excited to take part in this great initiative by Warehouse Stationery.

96 000 students took part - swapping parcels of their writing with a class somewhere else in New Zealand.

First we learned about writing metaphors about ourselves.  A metaphor compares two things that are not alike by saying something is something else.

For example:

Ethan is a monster gobbling up food.

Ethan's Dad agreed with this metaphor!  "This is one of Ethan's favourite things....FOOD!"
A super metaphor to describe how much you enjoy food, Ethan.

Hannah is a parrot that sings and chats all day long.

Hannah's Dad commented on Hannah's seesaw, "Yes, that is correct"  A great metaphor to describe yourself, Hannah.

Polly described how much she enjoys art by writing,

Polly is a paintbrush dancing on the page.

Our metaphors descried a little bit about ourselves to our buddy class.
We received 32 blank postcards in our writing kit so we copied our best metaphors onto a postcard each.  Here they are:

We coloured the back of each of our postcards too.  When our postcards are put together they will reveal a secret message for our buddy class. We are wondering what ours will say!

Lastly, as a class, we completed a poster all about us!  We found out that 14 of us could roll our tongues and that we have 79 children in all of our families!

We sent our package on Friday.  It is going to St John's School  in Mairangi Bay, Auckland.
We can't wait to read our postcards and poster from them.
Thanks Warehouse Stationery!

Spellosaur

Spellosaur is a wonderful app for learning our spelling words.  We add our new words each week, complete some fun activities using our words and then we test our words.  We have learned how to screenshot our test results so we can share them on our blogs.

Reading to Self

Today we learned how to read quietly to ourselves.
This helps us to get better at reading and is fun and enjoyable.  Reading familiar books is important for gaining confidence and for practising reading with fluency and expression.

Art Deco Day at School 2017

Art Deco 2017 on PhotoPeach

We had so much fun coming to school on Monday wearing Art Deco clothes.

We talked about the earthquake that struck Napier and Hastings on the 3rd of February 1931 and we learned that Napier was rebuilt within a few years in the style of that era - Art Deco.

We had an Art Deco inspired tea party with our best crockery!  We enjoyed sipping pink lemonade and nibbling on some delicious biscuits.  We tired our best to be very fancy! It was so much fun.

At lunchtime we enjoyed eating our picnic lunch on the courts with the whole school.

Parkvale Rocks!

On Tuesday we walked down to Windsor Park to hide our colourful stones.  Mrs McCourt, Mr Lowe and Mrs McFadyen came too.

We stopped at the Palmer Symons Link Reserve to start with before heading around past the Top Ten Holiday Park to Windsor Park.

When we arrived at Windsor Park Mrs McFadyen spotted Mr McFadyen's cousins, Mirama and Dave, who live in Barnard Castle , near York in England.  They were just packing up their camper van to head north to Auckland and then back down south to Nelson.

Bethany and Athena gave their stones to Mirama and Dave so they could drop them off somewhere on their travels.
I wonder where their stones will go?

When we got back to school Mrs Blakesley posted some clues on a facebook page called 'Hawkes Bay Rocks' and people rushed out to find our stones.
We are excited to see them being found and then re hidden.

Holly and Sophie's stones were found in Clive on Thursday.

Anoop's was found at the Lion's Community Park.

We hope we've made lots of people smile!

Our Holiday!

Mrs Blakesley and Red went camping by the Mohaka River.

This is our campsite.

Evan and Sky our dog.

Jack and Ashley playing with Sky.

We did lots of fishing.  I didn't catch any trout but Jack did.

It was fun playing spotlight at night!

We had a fun time camping.  We can't wait to go again next year!

Red has been having lots of fun at home on these hot days...

See you soon!
